Getting to Know Your International Contacts

Hello!

My international contact is in Iran. From her I have found out that there are several differences between Early Childhood Education here in the U.S. and in Iran.Though, there are pre-schools in her city, which they call Kindergartens, many mothers do not work and keep their children at home until time to attend elementary school. There are also no men teaching in the Kindergarten programs in her city. I hope to gather more information from her, but contact has been difficult due to the time difference and our busy schedules.

Studying inequities this week gave me the opportunity to reflect on what I can do as a teacher and member of my community to help work against inequities in education.

  1. Hello April! Vast differences already! Preschools being called Kindergarten over there, wow!! But I must say that at the rate America is going it feels like we're about the same!! The things that children are doing in Kindergarten is the same as what we did in first and second grade back in my days!!! And Preschools seem to be doing what 'old Kindergarteners used to do a while ago!! Boy are roles changing!! As for the men in early childhood, we do have SOME, here in America, but it's a mostly female dominated career! Great post!!

  2. Hi April,

How fortunate for you to receive a response from your international contact! Despite the time difference this is great steps on your part. It is ironic that they in Iran refer to the early childhood classes as Kindergarten, that is what we say here in Jamaica too. We start at the Kindergarten level 1 for 3 year olds Kinder 2 for 4 year olds and Kinder 3 for 5 year olds. And then when the children are 6 years they transition to the primary schools which you in America refer to as elementary school. Interesting, I am still hopeful that I will receive a response from my international contact.

    Thanks for sharing

  3. Hi April,
ADD is a topic that everyone in the educational field should know about. I agree that children do have difficulties expressing their wants. Children with ADD may exhibit some trouble with socializing and completing tasks. I am researching more about inclusion and how it can help with language difficulty in a preschool setting. We have chosen different topic yet, there are still similar because children are struggling with learning skills and social interaction.
